Overview

Detailed description

The project focuses on training a group of 250 teachers and purchasing textbooks for school libraries, with the aim of ensuring high-quality education for approximately 15,000 children in the Diocese of Pala, Chad.

The initiative is being implemented by the Rotary Club Fenice, District 2031 Italy, in collaboration with the Rotary Club N’Djamena Toumaï, and is co-funded by The Rotary Foundation, demonstrating the strength of Rotary’s international network.

The project has a total value of approximately USD 32,000. Training will begin in September 2026 and continue for one year. The training programme will be delivered by a specialised organisation and will equip teachers with up-to-date, effective teaching skills capable of generating a tangible and lasting impact in local communities.

Access to education is a fundamental driver of development, helping to build a better future for thousands of children.

Community Assessment: How the Project Team Identified the Community’s Needs

In the heart of the Mayo-Kebbi East and West provinces, the Diocese of Pala (Chad) operates a network of 61 schools providing education to 15,820 students within a particularly challenging geographical and socio-economic context. These schools, located primarily in remote rural areas, often represent the only viable alternative for quality education available to local communities.

A needs assessment has identified a central issue: the majority of teachers within the diocesan school network are recruited locally without structured initial training or regular pedagogical updates. This lack of formal preparation severely limits their ability to master new participatory and inclusive teaching methodologies, which are essential to meet the diverse needs of students.

Furthermore, there is a critical need to source textbooks suitable for children and young people aged 5 to 15 (the textbooks currently available are intended for high school and university students). Local authorities (the mayor) have been interviewed and have provided a formal letter confirming this necessity.

Project Impact: How the project will benefit the community upon completion

The project will support the community by delivering quality learning opportunities to approximately 15,000 children aged 5 to 15, a decisive factor in breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting sustainable local development. This will be achieved by providing professional development and growth opportunities to teachers through qualified trainers, enabling them to master new participatory and inclusive methodologies, as well as effective instructional methods for student assessment. Furthermore, the impact will be strengthened by supplying teaching materials and improved facilities (books and library furnishings). The beneficiaries are children and students aged 5 to 15, without distinction of gender, ethnicity, religion, culture, or social background.

Sustainability: How the project benefits will be sustained over time

Long-term sustainability will be ensured through library membership fees. The new equipment and the availability of age-appropriate books for children and young people aged 5 to 15 will attract many children and youth to use the libraries. This will ensure long-term continuity by increasing the number of library subscribers.
